I waited for actual snow before writing this review, it's snowed about 3 inches so I unpackaged this unit donned my gloves and hat and set forth to clear my car. There are two clips on the unit where the handle is stored, unclipped the handle and adjusted for size. ( I have a small SUV) First setback was the units handle locking and unlocking system is tight and secure, really really tight and secure! After some grunting and twisting I got the thing set up. When tight, unlike the photo the scraper is at a 90 degree angle to the snow pusher ( more on this later). The foam snow pusher actually did a good job and cleared snow cleanly with no marring, it seemed to hold up to the usual edges and bumps from wipers, antennas, etc. and the length made the job quick.

After snow removal I used the scraper end to get the light coat of ice off the windows. Because the foam pusher end is at 90 degrees to the scraper you end up trying to manage scraping with a wet 18 inch or so pusher end oriented up and down dripping icy water on you while trying to scrape horizontally. Trying to unlock the handle for storage with wet cold gloves was an exercise in frustration I managed it by sitting in my car for some leverage. Now I'm no weakling but I can't imagine a slightly built person or a lessor grip actually adjusting this thing on a cold dark wet icy morning with cold wet fingers. I was soaked by the time I was done.

Overall, a good idea, but poor execution.

I live in the Central Rockies and we've gotten 2-3' snowfalls at a time and this mat has kept the entryway clear and dry, including some subzero nights. Really worth the price. It has prevented the usual accumulation of ice and snow in this area that can prevent opening the door, and it reduces the amount of snow that gets tracked indoors. (We have a wooden deck, so it is hard to remove ice without gouging the wood.) An unexpected bonus is that our dog loves to sit on it and that extends the time he enjoy outdoors!

We bought nine of these HeatTrak HR20-60 Heated Walkway Mats to make a snow and ice free path between my front porch and our driveway. These mats require the HeatTrak HR-P Residential Snow & Ice Heated Stair Mat Control Unit With 6-Foot Power Cord to work and up to 5 of these mats can be connected to a single unit (so we needed two of these, one for two HeatTrak HR10-30 Residential Snow & Ice Heated Safety Tread, 10-Inch by 30-Inch, 120 Volt coupled with four of these Walkway Mats and one for the remaining 5 Walkway Mats). These work pretty much as expected, with the following observations:

Pros -
+ Easy To Install; mats connect together via waterproof couplers and have grommets in each corner to allow securing to the ground with stakes (we used 6" Timber Tie nails)
+ Heats Up Fast; was over 80 degrees Fahrenheit after fifteen minutes

Cons -
- Curls; if not secured, the ends will curl up (see video)
- Protruding Connectors; the connectors stick up a good bit and are prone to be stepped on

Fortunately we had sleet the day after these came in so we had a chance to try these out and they melted the little bit of ice accumulation very quickly.

UPDATE: 01/27/2011 - We had 6" of snow last night and the mats worked exactly as hoped to melt off the accumulation to provide us a clear path to the driveway (see picture in "Customer Images").

I clear several driveways in a very snowy area of Salt Lake City, Utah. Needed a pusher shovel that would conform to the surface and leave no snow behind. Shovels with a metal edge just don't clean any but the most even surfaces. This shovel really meets my needs! Excellent blade durability so far (a couple months of moderate use). My only complaint is the blade to handle connection is a little loose and allows the blade to wobblea bit.

Though this is called a Kids Snow Shovel, it's not just for kids. I've used a small shovel for a few years, taking it with me in my car on snowy days, just in case. I'm 76 and it's nice to have an alternate to the big shovels, easier on my heart and body. When a previous small shovel broke (cheap construction), I ordered two Garants from Amazon--one for the car, one for the house. They are brightly colored one-piece heavy plastic construction; the snow doesn't stick. I still use my larger shovel at times, esp for big spaces, but in a pinch or small space, nothing beats the kids size.

GreenWorks 26012 8 Amp 12" Corded Snow Shovel Review

I have used this item twice since purchase--a 2 inch and a 4 inch snowfall. It does an excellent job of throwing loose snow from my driveway. The only problem I have noticed is that the plastic scraper (also known as the snow spade) wears down rapidly. I am using the thrower on a concrete drive and pushing it across the concrete is like grinding the plastic away. Replacement scrapers are $20 so I hope I don't have to replace it several times a year. It seems to me that the scraper should have a metal wear surface that would hold up better than the plastic. I am in the process of trying to design aluminum "skid" for that purpose.

Superbly engineered and well-made, this is the best snow broom I've ever owned. I've had it for two New England winters, and it's held up well and performed flawlessly.

This year I bought a Honda Pilot, a sizable SUV which can take a lot of snow on its roof. Now I truly appreciate the value of the extending handle. With its 60" reach, I can get the snow off the entire roof while standing in one spot beside the car. No walking around, no getting snow in my boots!
