True Temper 1630300 General Purpose Steel Shovel with Wood Handle Review

I live in New England and we have been suffering through the worst winter in anyone's memory. We are on hard times, snow-wise. I had a steel snow shovel for several years, it was in bad shape and finally broke completely. I was at a real loss because the snow keeps coming. I went to several stores and no one had steel shovels. In desperation I bought a plastic snow shovel. It was better than nothing but, just barely. With plastic shovels, you get a heavy scoop on there and the blade bends from the weight and you have no control over it. And forget about cutting through an icy crust layer, the shovel bends under the pressure and has no bite to it. If you are suffering from this situation, I want to recommend the Ames True Temper shovel.

I used this shovel to dig a path for my oil man to deliver oil to my house. I had to dig through a huge snow drift and several feet of fresh snow with a 1/4" ice crust on top. This shovel did it! I smacked the top of the snow and shattered the crust then I scooped it away with the shovel. It also worked to scoop up big shovelfuls of the lighter snow underneath. I mean, this is digging shovel! For lighter snow conditions I would probably switch to my snow pusher but for the conditions at hand, this shovel is definitely worth the extra money. I think it would also be great as a gravel scoop.

I am at the end of my wits with this snow. The winter of 2011 is going to stick in my memory for a lifetime. Did you know, I had to hire someone to come with a backhoe to scoop up snow drifts from my house, because there is no room for the plow to put any more snow, at all? This is the conditions I am talking about, for which this Ames shovel really helped me. I am very pleased with the purchase, the scoop is fairly wide (about 14" or so) and very heavy, giving you serious control over your load. It's heavy but sometimes you need a heavy shovel. So, this is not a shovel for light loads or where you want to move a lot of light fluffy stuff. It's built well for heavy loads and especially where you need a shovel that can bite into the material you need to move and put some weight behind it. Keep that in mind, but if you have that need -- and you will, eventually -- this is the shovel that meets that need.

After 10 years+ of plowing with the 4 wheeler Moose County Plow and having to get off and on the wheeler a minimum of about 20 times to manually change the plow angle each time while plowing our extended driveway, this unit is a most welcome addition! Although the write up states it fits all Moose Plows except for the new RM3 system, when we got the kit it was missing the two hydraulic hoses and fittings and furthermore the main push tube bracket for mounting the rear of the cylinders to the push tubes would not fit... My wheeler / Moose plow is about 10 years old and apparently somewhere over the years Moose changed the dimensions of the push tubes.. I contacted Fuse-Powersports, where the kit was sent from and they offered to send me the updated push tubes at no extra cost. Of course along with the missing hoses and fittings. Just got the parts and removed the old push tubes and with a little jimmy rigging got the new push tubes to fit my existing mounting bracket under my wheeler. The rest of the kit went together pretty well and after filling the pump with fluid and doing the air bleeding the plow turned just as it was supposed to... We had just got about 3+ inches of new snow and gave it a try... What a pleasure to use!!! Took probably half the time to clear the driveway than it used to.. Never had to get off the wheeler once... The only slight drawback, other than the price, is the pump motor moves the blade pretty slow but still better than the alternative.. Not sure about the lonterm durability of the kit yet but at first try it was GREAT! If the cost of the kit scares you as it did me at first, the convenience it affords and the added pleasure of plowing snow more than makes up for the cost in my opinion.. Kathy's husband...

<Update after 2 winters of use: It does not roll as smoothly as I was hoping and there are several parts that are starting to rust, however overall, I do not regret buying it.>

It is reasonably well built machine with one exception, and I finally got it working and it works far better than any of the cheaper spreaders that I have used in the past.

But that exception was a biggie and worth a 2 star knockoff...

I was about 1/2 way thru my first salting of the sidewalk when it started jamming. The flat end of the spinner gear teeth were not always going directly into the holes of the drive gear, but rather occasionally hitting the edge of the opening and the unit just stops dead in its tracks and you get a handle to the stomach.

All of those pieces came pre-assembled and are not very adjustable.

My first attempt at fixing it was calling them to ask for suggestions. I called them repeatedly over the course of two weeks and finally got a call back. His reponse was that the set screw at the base of the 6 tooth gear assembly needs adjusting. Made sense during the phone call, but as I took a look in more depth today, not so much. There is no set screw there, just a long coil pin thru the axle of the spinner assembly. This is actually much better than a set screw as it cannot come loose, however no help to my problem.

As I investigated, it seems that the problem is that the large drive gear (the large circular plate with the holes for the 6 tooth spinner gear to drive) is wobbling too far away from the 6 tooth gear. The drive gear seemed too loose on the axle allowing it to wobble too much. I saw that someone else in here moved a washer, but somehow this fix was not clear to me. The ideal solution in my mind was to use a very thin piece of aluminum to drive between the drive gear and the axle, but I did not have any, so I just used a rotary tool and ground away the corners of the 6 teeth and it seemed to work, until I actually had it loaded with salt and wanted to use it, so back to the drawing board.

I finally had inspiration by realizing that an aluminum can may be the solution, and it was. I cut up the can to make three thin strips equal in length to the circumference of the axle. I got two into the space between the bolt and the spinner assembly and one on the other side of the bolt (all between the drive gear and the axle. No more wobble and it is always tight against the 6 tooth spinner gear and it works well now.

The instructions on SaltDoggs website are far more detailed than the one that comes with it. Tho those instructions have an addendum instructing you to install a locking coller on the lower linkage that did not come with my WB100B.

The instructions show the agitator pin, but does not show you where it goes. There is a hole in the tip of the shaft of the spinner assembly. It goes in there to agitate the salt so it flows better.

I have not tried it with fertilizer yet, so I am still uncertain how the markings compare to the suggestions you see on the bags of fertalizers. <Update, I did try and the long oval nature of the holes did not fair very well. Too difficult to ensure even coverage. I will likely pick up a cheap spreader as well>

Unlike another reviewer, when I put mine together, the slotes did close 100%, they just did not open 100% without removing the thumb set screw, but I have not had a need to open it 100% yet.
