I live in the icy cold north. My house is a recent modern house with excellent insulation, but I have three roof sections where the flow of ventilation air from the eave vents to the ridge vents is limited. Partly, this is because my house has hip roof surfaces (rather than simple gable roof) which limits ridge vent length. The next problem is valleys, especially around my chimney mass, where intersecting rafters tend to baffle air rather than letting it flow. The final problem is an interior corner where the roof section runs up to the second storey wall, but this short section is unvented at the top end.

After three years of dealing with three ice dam areas, including two years of serious water invasion and one year with only minor invasion, I gave up and tried these cables -- against all the good advice of the internet pundits and my contractors. I'm glad I did, because it is IMPOSSIBLE ($$$$$$) to change your roof profile to overcome this ice dam vulnerability. Instead, you have to stock up on calcium chloride (rather than salt), keep a suitable ladder handy and USE THESE CABLES TO MAKE SURE YOU DON'T NEED THE CHEMICAL! (The chemical is only a last ditch fallback, but mine is now five years old because the cables have worked so well.)

It is a nuisance to apply this cable each Autumn and take it down each Spring. It is irritating to have to set up power cables and a timer to ensure that it runs an appropriate amount of time to keep draining any icy areas before a dam forms... BUT IT IS WONDERFUL TO GO FOR FIVE YEARS WITHOUT DAMAGE AND REPAIRS!!!

For the price, these chains are great. I'm using them on a DR brush mower set up for snow plowing. I had to wrap several loops of 12 gage electrical wire (used the black strand on the outside and white facing the machine - for aesthetics) through the links on each side of the tire to keep the chains from twisting off the tires. Once I did that, they worked well and stayed snug to the tires (for two storms, so far). I would have tried a couple of pairs of the tire chain springs but it is impossible to determine from most of the ads what size tires they will fit on. I had the wire laying around so that fix cost me nothing!

This item arrived with major problems with the drive mechanism. All belts and the friction wheel disintegrated due to poor materials and the drive system failed from the first attempt to use it. I contacted Stanley and was given many instructions on how to find out and replace whatever was wrong myself. After replacing items at my own expense and considerable time, the repair did not fix the problem and failed immediately again. They would not take it back. It has been at a repair center since then and I have only snowplowed about 50 feet with it. As of this date I still have no resolution to the problem. My next call is to dispute the purchase to get it returned.
