AVALANCHE! DB550 Drift Buster 550 Snow Rake with Shield Review

This product does in fact function as described, but with some significant limitations. It can best be described as a modified snow rake with an edged cutting frame, wheels on the bottom (to enable it to roll up and over shingles), a hinged gate (to let snow through frame) and a rolled-up plastic slide (to allow snow to slide to the roof edge). I have used this product for approximately 2+ hours and have the following observations:

It is NOT useful for breaking up piles of hard-packed snow on roofs. A regular snow rake was needed to get things "started". However, once the "hard" snow is broken, the product does a credible job breaking up soft snow and crust, and the cascade of snow down the slide is occasionally impressive. It worked best on exposed soft snow and was able to whittle away edges of some harder crust.

Much of the product is plastic (except primarily the cutting frame and pole connectors), so I'm not optimistic for the product's long-term survival. Aluminum would have been better, and for this price, that's really what I expected. I'm definitely concerned how long the plastic front shield will last.

The pole sections also are a hard plastic, NOT aluminum, and tend to flex A LOT when trying to loosen snow. This made the product nearly unusable at its full 16 foot length, as the poles tended to flex and bounce. At its 12 foot length, the product was reasonably usable from a ladder; however, I was hoping to reach higher from the ground without the ladder.

Biggest problem - the plastic "slide" roll has already detached from the roller; also, it quickly developed some small holes which will need repair. While the product is usable without the slide, it's much more like a standard roof rake then, as you need to pull the snow back toward yourself rather than letting it fall.

Bottom line: This product - while usable - is best suited for preventative removal of new / soft snow. It feels a bit overpriced, and its durability is questionable. I'm going to keep it, but I foresee quite a bit of repairs and maintenance to keep it functional. I admit to being more than a bit disappointed.

North American Salt 50850 "Extreme 7300" Calcium Chloride Ice Melter 50 Lb. Review

It's calcium chloride, so it's blacktop safe but concrete bad. That's something to keep in mind along with the claim that calcium chloride is more plant-friendly than sodium chloride salt. I bought 4 of these 50-pound bags and all were encased in a second outer plastic bag. No leaks.
These things aren't cheap compared to regular salt but you get what you pay for and CaCl2 does a better job of ice melting.
I could have saved a few bucks and picked the bags up at a local store but then I would have had to travel 40-miles (for me) and humped the 200-pounds in and out of my truck. What a pleasure it was to have UPS deliver all the bags right to my doorstep.

Does the job well - Sand MUST be completely dry or it wont work and I mean COMPLETELY DRY, HCL flakes and pellets no problem - assembly was easy and it seems rugged enough, the cover wont last long and I bought the Stainless for longevity - but there is so little metal to this I think I would by the Carbon Steel model and save 220 dollars. But I do recommend this - it works better than an ATV or Tailgate spreader - easier to clean, load etc. I am doing 1000 feet of driveway and am done in a snap.

So, is it supposed to be three sections or one? I purchased this item from Crazy Daves Tool Shed and only received one. The product description says "3 Sections Of 60", Total Length 16' 3-3/8". I paid $20.09 total with shipping for just one 60" section of handle. I called Crazy Daves about this. They said Amazon made a mistake in the product description. So, at $12.41 each x 3 = $37.23 plus shipping to get three sections? You can get the whole roof rake for $38.79 (item GPRR24)! That's ridiculous. Buyer beware, this is a rip off.
