These parts work fine, and they were shipped very quickly and well packaged.

My story:

The previous owner installed heat cable to try to deal with ice damming, but no clips, so the cables were lying in the gutters but not on the roof. I had considered heat cable on my last house which also had ice damming problems, but decided not to because it sounded expensive and not great results. Anyway, because these were already installed I figured I'd see if I could make them work.

The clips work as promised, but I'm not sure the heating cables do. Now that they're on the roof too, they melt the snow when it's falling, so there's less build up of snow. That's a problem when sun heats the roof or heat leaking from the house melts the snow all at once; that's when the ice dams really build up.

However the cables are not warm enough to melt a lot of ice, although having them on the roof and in the gutters is a better idea than just in the gutters. If they were hotter they might work, but also be a fire hazard and suck up a lot of electricity. But the clips themselves work as promised.

Besides getting up on a ladder and chopping the ice off, which threatens the health of the shingles, I've found the following solution to work best: get some cheap nylon calf-length women's stockings, fill them with ice melt (not salt, but something that won't harm your shingles; I use calcium chloride pellets), tie them in a knot, and toss them onto the roof. Be careful not to breath in the dust from the ice melt, I'm pretty sure it's not good for your lungs.

I have had one of these de-icing cables on the front of my house for a few years and it worked great so I decided to add a few more around the house. I have never had a problem with ice dams but this seems like a pretty cheap precaution especially up here in NH.
They provide you with plenty of clips to attached to the shingles and the process is very easy and is a DIY project if you don't mind being on a ladder. It only took me about 30 min. to install the cable.

Just make sure you buy the correct length cable, the way to figure that is through some pre-planning. Take a look at the area you are planning to install the cable and take some measurements. You should have approx 2 foot loops about 16" apart, so if you have a 30 length of roof you want to cover your already at 60 ft., you also need to figure in extra cable for a double run in the gutter (if you have one) so if you add the 30 ft. gutter x 2 that's another 60 ft.

Then add the downspout, let's just say that another 15 ft. x 2 (need a double run for best results) that's another 30ft. So in total you would need a 150 ft. cable for a 30ft. length of roof with a gutter and a downspout.

I bought my first one a number of years ago at a chain store and was skeptical but then after using it to push off huge amounts of snow with one sweep I was hooked. The telescoping handle is nice and reaches high over the car. Lots of heavy snow can be removed in a few minutes unlike a snow brush which takes much more effort and time. And it won't hurt your car's finish.

I bought a replacement one for me and a second for a gift. I had to replace mine from last winter only because I wasn't careful to ensure the handle was properly secured and bent it by accident. The previous reviewer is correct you still need an ice scraper for your windows/windshield; but with the handle collapsing it can easily be stored in the trunk. It gets the snow off the car so quickly and easily, that I can clean off several cars in the time it would take me to use a brush on one.

Amazon is the only place I have found them online at a reasonable price. The only reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars is I wish the handle was a bit sturdier. Overall though terrific product!!

Easy Heat RS-2 Automatic Roof De-Icing Cable Control Review

I have used eight RS2 units for two years. After lots of trial and error and some modification, they do the job. I live in an area which receives an average of 11 to 12 feet of snow each winter. Compared to using heat tape with out the RS2 controllers, they significantly reduce my electric bill while improving the prevention of ice dams. I did have to splice about 25 feet of wire on the four of them to move the water sensor from the rake of the roof, where my outlets are located, to the valleys, where the most water comes down. I also had to lace lots of heat tape at the bottom of the valleys to keep big domes of ice from overwhelming the tape.

So the RS2 units work, BUT... one failed and was replaced under warranty. Now two more have failed after two years of service. There goes some of the savings in electric bills to replace those two and a lot of labor in winter conditions to remove and reinstall two units. Bummer!

PART 2: With a little disassembly and detective work I isolated the control unit, thermostat and water sensor components. Tests then showed that both units had failed with what is likely the most inexpensive component--the thermostat. I have now removed those electrically so that now I have two working control units with water sensors only. A couple of $12 Farm Innovators TC-3 units and my two failed units will be back in service for $58 each less than new RS2 units.

Mallory 999CT 36" Ultra Maxx Snow Brush Review

This is the best brush I've seen in a long time. It's incredibly durable, with the best brush end (generously thick bunch of bristles unlike many others, so I doubt it will get 'bent'.) I knew this before buying, but there is no squeegee end, which I rarely use anyways, but it does make a brush more appealing when it does 3 in 1. While this is pretty long, it's not as long as the brushes you can extend (which is more convenient to me as I am short.) I still wanted to get this one anyways since I knew it would be better quality, and my hunch was right. Though it has proper ergonomic design, this is also heavier than most, since it is not constructed of typical dinky plastic. So if you have a weak arm, this might not be your best option if you are going to spend 30 minutes or more wiping off your car (as snow is heavy enough.) However, I feel this will last a lifetime. This is not your purse scraper!

also, my brush arrived in blue color, which was nice, because I didn't want red anyways, but I wish amazon would give warning when not shipping 'what you see on screen'.

Tire Chains 20X8X8 20X8X10 Snow Throwers / Mowers 2 Link Review

To the point; these things rule! Man, I am telling you, I put these suckers on my new craftsman 24 hp YT (yard tractor), and not that it didn't barrel through everything before, but now it don't stop! This is good and bad.

I read another's review about chains, they said they were going to get the tire weights and the chains, but then decided to pick up the chains alone. So I did the same thing. May not need the weights, or I can rig a bar and stick a 35 lb plate on it, or sit on one. I know this isn't a review for my tractor but let me tell you that I drive that thing into grass, weeds, small trees and bushes, and thick stuff, some 5 feet high with no hesitation. I was occasionally getting caught in a hidden burrow or on stalks of the bigger flowering bushes and spin a little here and there. if I got hung up I would reverse and put in 2nd or 3rd gear' or 6th if I wanted to literally fly over it. With the chains, I just push right through, grip and rip right through in 1st gear. these chains DIG me into the ground, lmao, when teetering on a slight incline, and the dirt flies! Lean over that tire, it grabs and you are back. These chains turned that monster (I like it) craftsman into a beast!

The only caveat; they will keep you moving, so stay alert! I hit a stump, small rotten, was able to kick it out of the ground with a few kicks but the tractor hit it, and before I could stop the blade, they stopped themselves. I bent that one blade a good 40 degrees! Could not believe it, and I was in 1st gear. So be aware, the chains may give you more traction than you realize; some slippage may be a good thing once in a while.

Putting them on was pretty cut and dry, although the second tire started to make me work so I just let air out and then put them on and refilled. Couple zip ties or over size trash bag wire ties for the excess links and you are set! Put a bumper on your tractor!

I highly recommend them! Killer!

Snow Joe SJ621 18-Inch 13.5-Amp Electric Snow Thrower With Headlight Review

Bought the model SJ621 a few weeks back at a big box club store as Amazon wasn't carrying the Snow Joe with a headlight.

First used this little fellow a couple days after receiving it on about 6" of wet, early season snow.

The Snow Joe did OK in clearing our driveway. It is a little small (18" width), which means you'll have to make more passes, and since it's electric, you might have to "double-pump" a bit, as in make a pass then make another one immediately afterwards.

Our snow was pretty wet, especially close to the driveway, so Little Snow Joe only threw it 10' at most, but using my head I was able to clear our 60x80' driveway in just under an hour. I'd imagine it will do better with drier snow.

Of course I had to go around after the Snow Joe with a shovel to clean up, but that's to be expected.

I wouldn't try wet snow any deeper than 6"...this morning I could tell this little guy was straining...this means any larger storms and you'll have to keep ahead of the snow in order to not overwhelm the Snow Joe.

I took the advice on the instructions and put some WD-40 on the pivot points of the chute and lever and it was easy to turn and aim.

Didn't need the light the first time I used it 'cuz it was daytime, but after use I noticed it was covered in snow, so I'm guessing when I do use the light I'll have to keep brushing it off.

I used a 12GA 100' extension cord and this seemed to work fine.

All in all, much easier than shoveling by hand, and at this price, a very good deal.

UPDATE 12/20:
Well, this little guy just took care of another 5" of wet snow. In addition, the headlight came in very handy tonight as it helped me see where the extension cord was...even with a bright yellow cord, it's hard to see it when it's snowing hard and dark. Still very happy with the purchase. I may make a video of the little fella in use during the next storm.
