Prestone Driveway heat is superior to sodium chloride (rock salt) in several dimensions. Calcium chloride has a lower melting temperature and is less corrosive to concrete. Additionally, the jug is a superior container to large paper bags. The downside, of course, is that it is expensive. Deicing a large suburban home for three months a year could cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

The jug is excellent for use near home entrances as it can be conveniently stored indoors. Just reach outside and quickly sprinkling the salt outside the door. This is much easier and neater than reaching into a 40 pound bag and grabbing a handful of salt.

This lower melting temperature offers some additional benefits when used creatively. If you would like store frozen foods and don't have dry ice handy, a frozen 2 liter bottle of a saturated CaCl solution may work. In practice, temperatures of 25 degrees F are feasible, which will generally not be cold enough to store ice cream for more than a few hours or so. Exceptional insulation may make this more feasible.

It is possible to use the product to cut your summertime electrical costs. This is one tough snow shovel. It's heavy gauge steel with a strong wood handle. But, it's really only good for pushing snow around. Use this to push the snow along concrete or asphalt and then if you need to pile snow up, use something else. My last driveway was up against the house and I shared it with the next door neighbor. I had to push most snow the length of the house before I could pile it up. This saved a lot of time. On my new drive I can just push the snow off to each side - a task this shovel is ideal for. I use two shovels; this one to push the snow around and an aluminum "feed and grain" style shovel to move piles. Give it a shot of silicone spray before shoveling and the wet snow will peel right off. Much quieter than a blower and good exercise as well.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the rivets started to loosen after the first season - but after retightening them, everything is fine. You should also give it a coat of primer to keep any bare metal from rusting at season's end.

Last Year I purchased this model. I've found that when I put perfectly granular name brand rock salt in the hopper it does not flow freely. The salt is stored inside a building, on a pallet to keep it dry. Because of the moisture in the spreader due to weather conditions, the salt needs agitating. After talking to the company who sold it they called the factory rep and he said the spreader would not accept an agitator because the motor is not heavy enough. The factory rep suggested an adapter to accept an agitator at the cost of $350! This salt spreader is causing frustration whenever it is used.

so i had back surgery several years ago and after our 3 blizzards last year in the washington d.c. area i decided this year to get an ergo type shovel.

ive seen curved ones.
ive seen all sorts of other types, but i had NOT seen a double handle curve like this. im 6'2 and this is a good height for me.

pros:
- price
- design
- metal blade on the end
- comfort holding
- comfort while shoveling
- extended depth on shovel head allows more snow

cons:
- the 2nd support handle kinda creaks when u use it.. its sturdy plastic however the locking mechanism could be better? (i wonder how long it will last>?)
- the actual shovel head is far from wide..

great shovel.
nice on the back to use (id rather shovel than use a snow blower.. cost and i do at least get exercise with shoveling)

(oh yea - it was a HUGE pain unpacking it from the fedex wrapping.. who ever at amazon packaged it wrapped bubble wrap and then 18 or so little fedex bags around the damn thing and used enough tape to run the length of the amazon river. it was ubsurd taking 20 minutes to get this thing out of there)
