Product Description

For over thirty years Hopkins has shaped the winter snow and ice tools category. The wide blades on our ice scrapers clear away frost with fewer strokes and less effort, and the powerful ice chippers break up the thickest ice of the season. Our snowbrooms are capable of pushing the wettest, deepest snow from your entire vehicle.

Hopkins 18841 Extendable 46" Arctic Plow with Grip Review

It's basically a 16" snow rake made out of "nerf ball" material. (NOTE: This model lacks the 'ice scraper' handle attachment, a model I also have reviewed. I own a few of both designs, and they are identical in performing the main job: clearing snow off your vehicle. The model with ice scraper is a few inches longer, due to the scraper. No big deal, IMHO. Personally, I like this model, as I use a separate, shorter ice scraper -- the scraper on the other 'Arctic Plow' model seems unwieldy to me.)

In my experience, this tool won't scratch your car, freeze or ice-up (as brooms do), or otherwise disappoint you ... with one proviso: As with another reviewer, I initially had trouble with the 'head' unscrewing from the handle after a few swipes. I then took a slip-jaw wrench and used its bite and leverage to screw the head on another click or two (yes, it does have a few clicks beyond maximum 'hand tightness'). I've never had a problem since. And believe me, there has NEVER been a quicker and more effective device for clearing snow -- even a lot of snow -- from your vehicle.

I live at 7,300 feet in the Northern Sierra mountains (above Lake Tahoe) and we get more snow here than most folks. Think 5+ feet in a bad couple of days. My daily winter driver is a Jeep Rubicon with a 5-inch lift, so the roof is way up there. With the snow rake ('Arctic Plow') extended, I can clear 2 feet of snow off the roof in under a minute, and the rest of the vehicle in another minute. Try that with a broom (I did, for years ... but never again). I do use an 8" hand-held dust brush to clear the details -- headlights, bumpers, side mirrors -- but that's just me, I clear the jeep completely even when it's still snowing.

I've bought 4 more of these Arctic Plow things as gifts for my (grown-up) kids and my wife, at $29.99 each at the local hardware store. That's how much I like it. OBTW, it has two different sides, one for pushing and one for pulling the snow off the roof, hood, etc. Both work great. As I said, I wish I had invented it!
