I live in the icy cold north. My house is a recent modern house with excellent insulation, but I have three roof sections where the flow of ventilation air from the eave vents to the ridge vents is limited. Partly, this is because my house has hip roof surfaces (rather than simple gable roof) which limits ridge vent length. The next problem is valleys, especially around my chimney mass, where intersecting rafters tend to baffle air rather than letting it flow. The final problem is an interior corner where the roof section runs up to the second storey wall, but this short section is unvented at the top end.

After three years of dealing with three ice dam areas, including two years of serious water invasion and one year with only minor invasion, I gave up and tried these cables (I use 1 x 100 ft plus 2 x 60 ft versions) -- against all the good advice of the internet pundits and my contractors. I'm glad I did, because it is IMPOSSIBLE ($$$$$$) to change your roof profile to overcome this ice dam vulnerability. Instead, you have to stock up on calcium chloride (rather than salt), keep a suitable ladder handy and USE THESE CABLES TO MAKE SURE YOU DON'T NEED THE CHEMICAL! (The chemical is only a last ditch fallback, but mine is now five years old because the cables have worked so well.)

It is a nuisance to install this cable each Autumn and take it down each Spring. It is irritating to have to set up power cables and a timer to ensure that it runs an appropriate amount of time to keep draining any icy areas before a dam forms... BUT IT IS WONDERFUL TO GO FOR FIVE YEARS WITHOUT DAMAGE AND REPAIRS!!!
