Poolife Accudose Automatic Chlorinator (4.5 lb) for Above/In Ground Pools Review

PROS: Well built, settings have a wide range of adjustability, automatic works when your pump runs.
CONS: has to be permanently plumbed in your filter output line, also the chlorine fumes are harmful if opening while not completely empty, no way to tell if it's empty

First off, I don't endorse any type of pool chemical company. HTH, Poolife, etc are basically all the same conglomerate 'Lonza'. Pool Time @ homedepot, Aqua Chem and most other brands at Walmart are owned by another huge corporation also. So the chems are very similar. What's more important than the BRAND is the CHEMICALS themselves. Household bleach, ammonia, muriatic acid, and soda ash are cheaper and can do ALL the things that these boutique brand pool store chemicals can do, and much cheaper. But I digress.

Two years ago, I purchased a 'Pro Series' above ground soft side round pool, 22'x 52" which holds about 12,000 gallons of the finest well water (!) I could get.
After learning that the included 'hi-output' pump and cartridge filter system was a joke and couldn't recirculate water well enough to keep the pool balanced,
I replaced the pump with a 2300gph pump off of Ebay along with a free sand filter as a gift. This went a LONG way toward making the pool more maintenance free.

I got my pool water tested and came up with a pretty good chemical routine which consisted of chlorine tabs in a floater, and weekly shock treatment.

However, I was still using Tri-Chlor and Di-Chlor balanced shock and chlorine products from Wally-World (names have been changed to protect the chinese importers).
This resulted in me having above-normal levels of cyanuric acid which doesn't go away unless you drain and refill water from your pool. Backwashing frequently helps.

So, I went to my friendly neighborhood pool supply house, and they gladly sold me some Poolife non-balanced Calcium Hypochlorite products for shock and chlorination.
However, that's when I learned what the two different kinds of products do. I have learned not to go to a pool store unless you want to spend $100 on chemicals.

basically, all TriChlor products make your PH go DOWN, Calcium Hypo (and household bleach) makes your PH go UP. To get a maintenance free pool, you need to use both.

That's where the Poolife accudose chlorinator comes in. I put 3" trichlor tabs in the hopper (it will hold around TEN tabs) and put the dose on about 1/2 setting.
Then I put two Calcium Hypo "pills" in my floating chlorinator and turn it to 3/4 of the full setting on the bottom. FULL settings on both will be too much chlorine.

This in combination with occasional shocking keeps my PH in the optimal range, and it keeps my free and combined chlorine around 4ppm. No more adjusting PH after every shock treatment, and you don't have to shock as often. This results in spending less money and time on your pool maintenance and more time swimming in it.

Only thing I would change: Add a SIGHT GLASS type system to tell when you run out of tablets. My friend ran out of tablets and his pool turned green overnight!
Also, BE CAREFUL when opening the hopper if it still has TriChlor product in it, as the chlorine vapor will hurt your eyes and lungs. I suggest opening it facing away from the lid. It has an O-ring seal which likes to be greased occasionally with vaseline-type jelly. Otherwise this thing has very little moving parts to break.
