Snapper 1696000 24-Inch 205cc OHV Briggs & Stratton Gas-Powered Two-Stage Snow Thrower with Electric Start Review

This is a nice unit, and was shipped very fast via truck. One thing that should be noted is someone needs to be home for delivery. I haven't had a chance to try it in the snow yet, but it seems to be relatively well put together, but not built as tough as the old time Snappers (my father was a Snapper dealer in the late 1980's).

This unit has a Briggs and Stratton snow engine. My only experiences so far have been with Tecumseh engines, which work really well if you maintain them, but have lots of problems if you abuse them. The Briggs started right up and ran well, but there are two serious omissions: There is no throttle control, and there is no fuel shut-off. While the lack of a throttle is a minor annoyance, the lack of a fuel shut-off very surprising, and disappointing, especially in a snow blower. Thus the loss of one star.

This is a nice sized unit.... big yet manageable. The tall thin tires should dig well in the snow. This has a friction disc drive, which holds up well in Ariens and older snapper units, and is very easy to service.

I'll update the review when I have some snow to try this out in.

UPDATE 2/10/13: I finally got to try this unit out in some reasonable snow, and it performs great. Throws snow well, and easy to maneuver. Headlight was nice and bright, and the highest wheel speed is very quick for transporting. However, the lack of a throttle control remains annoying. I had to drive the unit from my back yard to the front yard around 9pm; it would have been nice to be able to reduce the engine speed so as not to disturb the neighbors. The lack of a fuel shut-off also remains a sticking point; I will probably add one in the near future. In the meantime, be sure to use plenty of fuel stabilizer, especially with today's ethanol-tainted fuels. So, I will keep with the 4 star review: Great performing unit, but should include a fuel shutoff and throttle control.
