Product Description
This creepy krauly platinum is simply the most powerful pressure-side cleaner for darker colored pools. It's the ideal choice for in ground pools exposed to higher loads of leaves and debris. A leading choice for pools with yards with lush landscaping and tougher cleaning challenges. Dual thrust jets provide maximum power for speed and suction so most pools are cleaned in just 1-3 hours. Front-wheel drive and heavily treaded tires provide maximum traction on inclined surfaces to assure total pool wall and floor coverage. Four wheel design prevents tipping (common with 3 wheel cleaners) for uninterrupted and unattended performance. Large-capacity debris channel and huge intake throat easily pick up larger leaves and debris. Suitable for concrete, vinyl-lined and fiberglass pools. Disposable debris bag for use with pressure-side in ground cleaner is available. Lightweight frame and improved tire/wheel design result in four times greater cleaning coverage of pool walls. Powered by an independent booster pump for maximum cleaning performance and unimpeded surface skimming. Available in gray color.Pentair LL505PMG Kreepy Krauly Platinum Pressure-Side Inground Automatic Pool Cleaner, Gray Review
Got mine not from here, but after, extensive, research decided to go for this one, in part due to an awesome deal on ebay for this cleaner and a booster pump, both new. Cutting the hoses to length as described clearly in the manual and without any other 'settings' I dropped it in the (above ground 24') pool. What amazed me as the first thing was the speed of this puppy...I was like..."how can it clean while going this fast?" Well,...it does! The speed comes mainly from the 2 jets in the back, combined with the wheel speed. (Wheel speed is higher than 'regular' 1 jet Legend) This is the main difference, I believe, with the regular one. Those jets are easy to 'aim' but careful now...it is sensitive to those adjustments! Simply because they are powerful. I think all pressure side cleaners specifically are sensitive to their 'adjustments' and this one is no exception. If you have trouble with any of them it could very well be possible that minor adjustments make a big difference, depending on pool shapes and sizes. It is a well balanced combination of many factors that make them work optimal. I should say that right out of the box mine worked excellent, but of course I couldn't resist trying a few adjustments. :)) Example: my pool never needs side wall cleaning but it climbs the wall regardless what I do to it....On that note...all pressure side cleaners work of the venturi effect, created by jets pointed upwards in the 'mouth' of the unit, which creates suction....not scrubbing, so don't expect miracles there concerning algae and the like. 'Dirt' has to be ....uhhh...loose as there is no contact between the mouth and the pool area. This is where the sweeping tail comes into play with a little 'scrubber' at the end. This will 'brush' the area behind the cleaner, which also indicates that the suction already passed that area, but it will/may pick up the loosened particles later on or the regular filtration will take care of that. Either case...it'll look spotless after the cleaner went around like a bat out of hell. The wheels are driven in the front only by a drive shaft with teeth who grip in plastic gear teeth inside the wheel. Btw...if them plastic teeth in the wheel wear out over time, which they will, simply rotate the back wheels to the front and voila...probably 4-5 more years on the unit as the back wheels are exactly the same with gear teeth! My guess is the the metal teeth outlast the plastic ones by a long time. Unit seems well build, but keep in mind it is mainly plastic and I would not try it to be "kid-proof". Upwards....the bag...It has a debri cone shaped flap which gets pushed away when water shoots up in the mouth and closes off the mouth pipe when pressure drops when you switch off the booster pump. Simply works. Inside the bag is another straight rubber flap that makes sure the tiny debris stays and doesn't flow out of the bag. Works too. Nifty flap. :))Now the hose...which is a matter all of it's own. This seems where most people encounter possible problems. Mind you...it is not always the hose causing problems but also the jet(s) on the unit itself. This is why I mentioned "well balanced". It all works together and it is very difficult to single out one specific area like a hose causing you difficulties perhaps. Because you see the hose curl itself up doesn't always mean it is the hose doing this. I would go as far as stating that in many cases your jet(s) need fine tuning. If you adjust that be sure you do this in very tiny increments for sure. As mentioned, mine worked good right out of the box with the factory settings, but I just couldn't resist. .....54 year old kids....give em a screwdriver and a hammer and .....sighhh (you know what I'm talking about)
Back to the hose: roll it up in tiny circles for neat storage and you will have problems, guaranteed.
My suggestion for, at least winter storage, if that is the case in your area, is to separate the hose pieces and hang them up in a non freezing place. Plastic has this memory thing they say and it is not really a memory but more like a settle thing due to time. Keep the hose warm when out of the water and you'll never have that issue. By warm I do not mean to get it it's own fireplace but you get the picture. The manual suggests to leave the hose out of the box in the sun for 24 hours, stretched out and yer good to go. Where I live we don't have 24 hour sun and, simply put, ...no way I was gonna wait 24 hrs to play with my new toy...You do not give a kid a new toy and then say that he can have the battery the next day! Not happening in my case.
Out of the box...no issues with my hose thanks to the swivels in the hose and on the backup valve. If one studies the hose you quickly come to the conclusion that in certain spots it could use more swivels but not really. Sure...the cleaner will try and roll itself up in a bundle of spaghetti once in awhile, but it also gets itself out of it in all my instances. Placement of the hose floats comes into play here. Separate them even distances and in most cases that's all. Another method of 'stretching' the hose would simply pour warm/hot water in the hose and let that sit for a few minutes to 'soften' up the hose and clear it of it's "memory". (How hot? Dunno, do this at your own discretion.... I'd say just warm is enough to soften up the hose.) Then, while the hose is still warm(ish), run a few seconds of cold water through it and no more memory. If your hose still has a 'memory' after that you need to send it to a hose-therapist or chiropractor.
This all sounds complicated? I hope not, but if it does, just follow the manual instructions for cutting the hose(s) and throw it in the pool, switch on yer booster pump and you, most likely, will find that you should have kept over-eager husbands and the like away from it because it worked just fine right out of the box.
Note: I do not believe any judge will consider this as grounds for a divorce....
Enjoy your clean pool!
