The chlorine that is generated provides a long-lasting, measurable residual that can be tested with easy-to-use test strips. Once the chlorine has oxidized dead bacteria and algae, it is recycled back into salt -- ready to be converted to chlorine again. You only need to add non-iodized salt (water softener salt) once -- after that, only small amounts of salt are needed a few times a year. We bought our 1970's house with a 22K gallon in-ground swimming pool, at that time we even didn't know that floating duck with sunglasses is for releasing chlorine from tablets into the water. We tested our pool water at local Leslie's, the long list of needed chemicals scared us.

We bought 10 bags water softener salt, $4.39 per bag, added 9 bags (360 lbs salt) into the pool in 3-4 days, brush the pool and turn on the water circulation for longer times each day to dissolve the salt. The generator started to work!

We monitored the controller readings closely, we saw the salt ppm became stable after some days, 9 bags of salt gets a perfect 2800-3200ppm. When the chlorine is being generated, the cell voltage is about 24-25V, current is about 4A. We put the percentage control knob at about 45%, each day the timer works for 6-7 hours. After 2 weeks we tested the pool water at local Leslie's (salt water belongs to another test category, different from chroline category), the water was almost perfect, with only pH a little higher. It's said that salt water chlorine generator system will raise pool pH gradually, therefore from time to time muriatic acid is needed.

Now we see the pool water is clean and clear, no more chlorine smell that we used to shock the water. Kids enjoy the pool quite a lot in the summer. The salt water chlorine generator makes us feel so relaxed of our pool water quality, we love it and our beautiful pool.

We never need to look at the 5-gallon bucket of chlorine tablets on sale at any store. Nice switch. And it's heard that more and more new pool constructions are using salt water chlorine generators.

Approximately 1-2 pints of muriatic acid is needed biweekly to reduce the pH. Regular brush is still recommended as usual. The generator manual says every a few months the cell need to be cleaned. That's all for the maintain.
